BBT COMMUNITY RIDES 2026
19/04/2026
Basilicata Coast to Coast is back, May 29 – June 2, 2026!
For the second time, you will have the chance to join the event that links two seas by bike. What has become one of the most iconic brands of our region now turns into a true Unsupported Bike Adventure. The BBT Coast to Coast takes place late in the season to make the most of the June 2nd holiday, guiding you from the Ionian Sea to the Tyrrhenian Sea in full adventure mode, riding your beloved bikes.
Three routes will take you from coast to coast:
IONIO gravel ROAD TIRRENO MTB adventure
From East to West, across changing landscapes. As always, expect continuous ups and downs — but this time you’ll slice Basilicata from east to west, experiencing first-hand a gradual yet intense change in scenery. The ride starts at Riva dei Greci Camping in Metaponto, among fields and orchards along the flat Ionian coast. Soon after, you will cross the lunar, desert-like landscapes of the calanchi.
Gaining altitude little by little, riding through valleys, river crossings, and countless natural elements, you’ll be thrown straight into the heart of the Apennines, among oaks, beeches, chestnut forests and peaks rising up to 2,000 meters. In this edition, the routes venture deeper into the Pollino National Park, offering breath-taking scenery.
Sleeping light, riding free. We will set up two free indoor bivouac points, located roughly at 1/3 and 2/3 of the routes. This allows you to travel without a tent and sleep comfortably with just a mat and sleeping bag. You can leave anything you do not need in Metaponto — and you will find it magically in Maratea. A super useful service, completely free of charge!
Your trip will end with a long descent down to sea level — a true reward:
Lido La Secca awaits you with a cold beer and a swim in the emerald waters of the Tyrrhenian pearl.
HOW IT WORKS:
We will provide all three GPX tracks, which can be mixed: you choose. The BBT Village waits for you from the afternoon of May 29, while the mass start is on May 30; you have 4 days to complete your journey. We’ll be waiting for you until June 2. If you decide to take more time, you are free to do so — but the finish village will no longer be active.
The routes are designed to optimize logistics. For those who want to complete the trail in 3 days, we have set up two indoor bivouac points (with showers and facilities) at about 1/3 and 2/3 of the route. Your journey will be monitored through a live tracking software.
THE ROUTES
Adventure MTB Route
● 331 km
● 6.900 D+
● 30% offroad 70% asphalt
The most demanding route in terms of distance and elevation gain, designed for MTB and extreme gravel. A true adventure that unveils the extraordinary landscape diversity of Basilicata. The track dives into the desert-like calanchi before climbing steadily toward the Apennines and the Pollino National Park, then plunges dramatically down to the sea in a relentless sequence of tough ascents and descents. A challenging route that offers no shortcuts when it comes to elevation and terrain — but the final descent into Maratea alone is worth every effort. The Adventure MTB route is the only one that reaches Maratea’s iconic statue of Cristo Redentore from above.
For experienced, well-trained riders
Recommended bike: MTB or gravel with at least 48 mm tires, low gearing, strong bike-handling skills.
IONIO gravel route
● 275 km
● 5.230 D+
● 20% offroad 80% asphalt
The “easiest” route in terms of distance, yet still a concentrated dose of authenticity, blending Lucanian asphalt (often gravel-like) with short, light dirt sections. It crosses areas of outstanding beauty and charming villages. Completed over four days, it’s the ideal choice for riders at their first adventure who don’t want to miss out on an unforgettable experience.
For those seeking the right balance between adventure and comfort
Recommended bike: Gravel
ROAD route
● 279 km
● 4.920 D+
● 100% asphalt
By now, there’s no Basilicata Bike Trail without a road route — and the truth is, we can afford it, because “Lucanian asphalt” is different. You’ll ride along state and provincial roads that feel as if they were made for cycling: deep silences, zero traffic stress, and we challenge you to count the cars you’ll actually meet. The surface isn’t always perfectly smooth, but so far no road bike has been harmed. You’ll be able to fully enjoy the journey, pedalling on forgiving terrain and gentle gradients..
For those who prefer smooth surfaces
Recommended bike: road, touring, or gravel
LOGISTICS – VERY IMPORTANT
During the event, the Battipaglia–Potenza–Metaponto–Taranto railway line will undergo maintenance works and buses, which generally do not allow bike transport, will replace the service. It will NOT be possible to reach Metaponto by train.
From Maratea, however, train connections north and south along the Tyrrhenian line will operate regularly. To return from Maratea to Metaponto, we have organized a DEDICATED SHUTTLE SERVICE, with the support of the Regional Department of Transport of Basilicata and Trenitalia’s regional management.
There’s always the most adventurous option: hop back on your bike and ride back to Metaponto following a different track.
