coast to coast
From Metaponto to Maratea
May 30 - June 02 2025
“Basilicata coast to coast”, the brand that has given our region fame, becomes an Unsupported Bike Adventure. Yes, in 2025 the BBT's tracks will for the first time touch the sea, or rather two!
The second spring edition goes almost to the end of the season, to take advantage of the 02 June long weekend and to bring you from the Ionian to the Tyrrhenian Sea in an adventurous mode.
It’s true, this is a coast to coast trip, but in fact you will ride in the mountains, as usually happens here. This time it will be nice to dissect Basilicata from east to west to experience live the gradual but substantial change of landscape. The trail will start from Riva dei Greci campsite in Metaponto, amidst the fields and orchards of the flat Ionian coast, than crosses the lunar and desert landscapes of the badlands.
Then, in a gradual gain in altitude, crossing rivers and adding natural elements, you will be catapulted into the Apennines, among oaks, beeches, chestnut trees and peaks touching 2,000 metres.
Finally, you will swoop down to the sea, arriving in the astonishing setting of Lido La Secca: the Tyrrhenian coast of Basilicata (Maratea) is practically sheer to the sea and the arrival - all the way down to zero altitude- will repay all the efforts faced with a cold beer and a dip in the emerald waters of the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
LOGISTICS
During the Trail, the the Battipaglia-Potenza-Metaponto-Taranto railway line will be affected by maintenance work, and will therefore be covered only by bus service, on which bike transport is not allowed, with a few exceptions. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT YOU CAN’T REACH THE STARTING POINT (METAPONTO) BY TRAIN.
Instead, from Maratea, you can travel by train north and south without any problems, on the Tyrrhenian line.
To return from Maratea to Metaponto WE HAVE ARRANGED A SPECIAL TRANSFER SERVICE with the support of Trenitalia regional management.
This service will be of high quality and definitely improved. Usually regional and intercity trains serve the Maratea-Metaponto route; in both options, the change must be made at Battipaglia with a journey time ranging from 4 to 7 hours. The BBT Shuttle, on the other hand, only takes 2 hours and costs 40 euros. You can book it by filling out the form and paying the fee no later than the closing date of registration (04 May 2025). The sooner you do this, the better we can organise the race.
If you decide to pack your bike, you can travel on buses and high speed trains on the way and keep it mounted on the way back.
The last option is also the most adventurous: get on your bike and ride to Metaponto following one of the tracks you didn't ride on the way out!
THE TRACKS
3 beautiful trails that cross the region on the east-west axis and suit all needs.
The tracks are not definitive: we are working to offer the best possible experience..
MTB ADVENTURE TRAIL
- 303 km
- 5.830 D+
- 30% dirt 70% asphalt
A real adventure, discovering the incredible variety of landscapes in Basilicata. The track goes deep into the desert of the calanchi (gullies), then climbs up towards the Apennines and descends steeply to the sea in a continuous and hard up and down. A tough route that makes no concessions in terms of altimetry and terrain, but the final descent to Maratea is worth all the effort. In fact, the Adventure MTB track is the only one that reaches Maratea's iconic ‘statue of the redeemer’ from above.
This trail requires training and experience.
Suitable bike: MTB, gravel with at least 48 mm tyres, agile gears and excellent riding skills
SHORT GRAVEL TRAIL
- 246 km
- 4.150 D+
- 10% gravel road 90% asphalt
This is the ‘easiest’ track in terms of mileage and altimetry, but it is still a concentration of authenticity in an alternation of ‘local’ asphalt (tending to gravel) and short, light gravel roads. It crosses places of extreme beauty and characteristic villages.
Done in 4 days, it can be the solution for those who are starting this kind of experience and don’t want to miss out on a great adventure.
Suitable bike: gravel
ROAD TRAIL
- 247 km
- 4.100 D+
- 100% asfalto
The latest news. We will make you pedal on state and provincial roads that can naturally be considered “bike paths", because there is absolutely no stress due to car traffic. Our asphalt is different: we challenge you to keep track of the cars you encounter. The asphalt is not always flawless, but still usable with racing bikes.
This trail is for those who do not like dirt roads.
Suitable bikes: gravel, touring, racing
